Information on Chinese New Year 2017 on our new website


On this site you will find information about the festivities around Chinese New Year 2016 in The Hague.

Chinese New Year starts on February 8, 2016. It is the Year of the Monkey.
The national celebration of the Chinese New Year will take place on
Saturday February 13
in the City Hall of The Hague.

It will start at 11:30 a.m. with Chinese fireworks at the Spuiplein.
After the official opening ceremony a varied programme will start around 13:00 p.m.
The performances by artists from China and the Netherlands will last until 17:00 p.m.

Hundreds of people from all over the country will visit the festival, among others representatives of the Dutch Government and Parliament, the Hague municipality government, the ambassador of P.R. China, diplomats of other countries, and representatives of the Chinese and Dutch business community.

Besides the national celebration in the City Hall, the Chinese New Year is also celebrated The Hague Chinatown. From about 13:00 p.m. on a parade of dragon and lion dancers will move through the streets, with lots of drumming, music and firecrackers. There is also an Asian New Year Fair.

The festival is open to the public

The programme of the national celebration of the Chinese New Year in the Hague is follows:

11:00 hrs Welcome drinks in the Foyer of the Town Hall (1st Floor)

11:30 hrs Dragon dance and fireworks on the Spuiplein

12:00 hrs Opening ceremony with traditional Dragons and Lion dance in the Atrium

13:00 hrs Varied programme of artists from China and the Netherlands in the Atrium

16:30 hrs End of official programme


From 11:00 on there is a Chines market in the Atrium of the city hall.

For the invited guests a Chinese buffet lunch will be served in the Foyer.
